Modern Monetary Theory: Australia's Economic Reality Explained
Sociocultural Australis cuts through economic jargon to reveal how Australia's monetary system actually works. Through the lens of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), I provide accessible analysis that challenges mainstream assumptions and offers practical alternatives.
What You'll Discover Here:
Why government debt and deficits aren't what you've been told
How Australia's monetary sovereignty creates unique economic possibilities
In-depth federal budget analysis without the political spin
Evidence-based solutions to inequality and unemployment
Why a federal Job Guarantee could transform Australia's economy
As an economist and educator specialising in MMT, I bridge the gap between heterodox economic theory and everyday Australians seeking better answers.
Why This Substack Matters
Most economic commentary in Australia recycles the same flawed assumptions. I offer something different:
Australian Context: Analysis specifically focused on our economy, not imported American or European frameworks
Plain Language: Complex concepts explained without unnecessary jargon
Practical Application: How MMT principles can address real Australian challenges
Independent Perspective: Not funded by corporate interests or political parties
Regular Insights: Consistent analysis of current economic events and policy proposals
Whether you're new to economics or well-versed in monetary theory, you'll find valuable insights that challenge conventional thinking and expand your understanding.
My Journey to Modern Monetary Theory
I didn't arrive at MMT through traditional academic channels. My path began with personal experience in Australia's "precariat" class, facing the real consequences of flawed economic policies.
As an autodidact (self-taught economist), I bring a perspective that differs from institutional economists. There's no PhD behind my name or six-figure university position supporting my work—just rigorous self-education and a commitment to understanding how our economy actually functions.
This unique background allows me to translate complex economic concepts into accessible language while maintaining technical accuracy. I understand firsthand why these ideas matter to everyday Australians.
